How to calculate concrete volume for UK projects

Whether you are laying a base for a new garden shed, pouring footings for a house extension, or installing a new driveway, ordering the correct amount of concrete is critical. Ordering too little means a weak, two-part pour, and ordering too much wastes your budget.

The Formula: Length × Width × Depth

Concrete is measured in cubic metres (m³). To calculate this manually, you simply multiply the length of your area by the width, and then by the depth.

Crucial step: Make sure all your measurements are in metres before multiplying. If your depth is 150mm, you must convert it to 0.15m before doing the math. (Our calculator above handles this conversion for you automatically!).

How deep should my concrete be?

Depth varies vastly depending on the structural requirements of your project. Here is a general guide for standard UK construction:

  • Shed base or light pathway: 75mm to 100mm
  • Standard patio: 100mm
  • Driveway (residential cars): 100mm to 150mm
  • Extension footings / foundations: 600mm to 1000mm+ (Must be verified by a structural engineer or building control).

Ready-mix vs. 25kg Bags

If your calculation shows you need less than 0.5m³, it is often more cost-effective to buy 25kg bags of pre-mixed concrete (or ballast and cement) and mix it yourself in a wheelbarrow or mini-mixer. It takes roughly 96 standard 25kg bags to make one cubic metre of wet concrete. For anything over 1m³, ordering a ready-mix lorry is highly recommended.
